The Skye Expedition
Five days on the edge of the Atlantic. Four photographers. One island I have returned to for forty years.
Not a tour
You can find the locations in any guide. What you can’t find is the waiting.
The Storr, the Quiraing, Neist Point — they are photographed ten thousand times a year. This is not about reaching them. It is about being there when the weather turns, when the light arrives for ninety seconds and is gone, when the sea finally does what you came for.
I work in square format, black and white. I will show you how I read a sky, plan a tide, and wait for the frame that is worth the cold. The photograph is not taken. It is received.
The week, shaped by the weather
Five days, Monday to Friday
Arrival & first light
We gather in Portree late afternoon. Settle in, opening dinner, and I read the week’s weather and tides aloud — because the plan bends to them, not the other way round. A short golden-hour walk by the harbour if the sky offers it.
The Storr & the foundations
Before dawn to the Old Man of Storr — the emotional heart of the island. We climb, we wait, we work the changing light. Back for a late breakfast and rest. Afternoon: composition in square format, reading light, a first review of frames.
The Quiraing & the long exposure
The Quiraing at first light — the most extraordinary land on Skye. Afternoon turns to water: the Fairy Pools and Brides Veil, ND filters and long exposures, the craft from my own coastal practice. Movement in water and sky.
The Atlantic & the granite
West to Neist Point — and Elgol if the conditions call us south. Cliffs, lighthouse, open ocean: the ground of Memory of Granite and Atlantic Silences. A long day, finishing on a signature sunset. The summit of the week.
Editing, transmission & close
Morning of selection and development. I share my black-and-white workflow and give each of you an honest critique of your strongest frames. You leave with processed images, not raw files. Group photograph, next steps, departure after lunch.

The promise
This expedition won’t teach you to shoot like me.
It will help you find what’s uniquely yours — the way you see, the way you stand in a landscape. Your gear fades into the background. You’ll come home with images that finally feel like your own.
